About the Opportunity:  

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Engineer to join the Brucejack Mine in Northwestern, British Columbia.

This position is located at Pretium Exploration Inc.'s "Pretivm" Brucejack Mine within the Environmental Department. The position reports to the Environmental and Regulatory Affairs Manager via the Environmental Superintendent and Environmental Coordinator. The Environmental Superintendent and the Environmental Coordinator cross-shift each other and provide the direct supervision at the Mine Site. 

The purpose of this position is to help ensure that:

  1. Potable water treatment and septic treatment and disposal systems at all project camps are properly maintained and operated, and meet regulatory requirements.
  2. Operator redundancy requirements are met for Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), the potable water treatment system and the Operations Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at the Brucejack Mine (training will be provided).
  3. Support is provided for WTP operations and achieving mine water quality discharge limits via both underground water flow and quality management and surface contact water management. 
  4. Authorized air discharges are monitored, and confirmed to be mitigated and managed in accordance with mine authorizations. The position entails preparation of technical reports and is intended to provide qualified professional sign-off as appropriate and required. 

The position is also to support the Environmental Department in working to maintain compliance with regulatory authorizations and legislated environmental requirements while taking a pro-active role in mitigating and resolving potential environmental issues and/or concerns that might arise in regard to mine operations. The Environmental Engineers are tasked, as required, to support other environmental monitoring and site environmental programs; applicable site permitting and related submission requirements; and applicable regulatory liaison. 

Responsibilities:

Perform the following duties with health and safety, environmental protection, and meeting Mine regulatory requirements being the main priorities:

  • Provide appropriate scientific/technical/engineering support to help address environmental challenges and meet required standards. 
  • Supervise and/or monitor operations, collect required samples, troubleshoot, and conduct or coordinate basic maintenance of potable water and septic system treatment/disposal systems at the Brucejack Mine Camp and other permanent and temporary Project camps including Knipple Transfer and Wildfire such that they are operated safely and effectively and meet regulatory requirements. 
  • Provide operator coverage (e.g. vacation relief) for Brucejack Mine STPs and the WTP (training will be provided). 
  • Work with STP and WTP operators, support staff, technical experts, and plant vendor to troubleshoot issues and ensure the maintenance and sludge handling/disposal as appropriate. 
  • Work with the WTP Supervisor, and other Pretivm personnel (Environmental, Mining, Geology, etc) technical experts retained by Pretivm, and mining contractor personnel to support WTP operations by helping to achieve effective water quality source control measures in the underground mine including conducting monitoring and other work as needed to support these initiatives.
  • Provide technical guidance on soil remediation techniques including but not limited to management and required maintenance of soil treatment facility (STF), sample analysis and interpretation against appropriate regulations. 
  • Perform cost-benefit and risk analysis exercises to enhance operational efficiency and support decision making as required for various projects (eg. STP and WTP performance and functionality, soil remediation management, air quality monitoring and enhancement, and interaction performance).
  • Support water quality prediction work and related reporting and permit applications as required. 
  • Monitor and perform other work as required to support successful operation of the mine surface contact water management system and non-contact water diversion channels (eg. assist with infrastructure inspections and audits).
  • Supervise operations of incinerators and other waste handling infrastructure to meet regulatory requirements. 
  • Collect samples and conduct other monitoring of the above systems as needed. 
  • Under the guidance and direction of the Environmental Manager or designate prepare permit applications and other regulatory submissions, and liaise with Northern Health Authority and other regulatory agencies. 
  • Facilitate weekly STP and WTP meetings, prepare minutes for distribution, and ensure confirmed actions are carried out accurately and in a timely manner. 
  • When requested, lead or participate in tours with Regulators, Compliance and Enforcement Officers, Health Inspectors, or others of infrastructure related to water treatment plant operation, air quality monitoring, incinerator operation, soil remediation, or any other area of the mine site requiring the expertise of the Environmental Manager. 
  • Perform laboratory and related monitoring work such as calibrating scientific instruments, completing field lab analyses (eg. use of various Hach test kits), logging numerical and visual observations, preparing packaging samples, ordering required sampling supplies, recording test results, and performing photo documentation. 
  • Support other environmental programs required by the Environmental Manager or designate including but not limited to water quality sampling and flow monitoring, data compilation, spill kit inventory, spill reporting, wildlife record keeping, instrumentation maintenance and calibration, installation of sediment and erosional control measures, and waste sorting/handling. 
  • Perform educational related tasks such as preparing and delivering presentations to on-site staff on topics needing to be addressed, as required. 
  • Provide support for emergency hydrocarbon and chemical spill response preparedness and coordination as directed. 
  • Adhere to all applicable health and safety regulations and company standards/policies and procedures. 
  • Participate in site specific training as directed. 
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

The candidate must hold a B.A.Sc Degree in Environmental Engineering and be (or commit to becoming) licensed to practice in B.C (P. Eng). Other engineering disciplines (eg. Civil Engineering) may also be considered. 

Skills:

  • Experience in an industrial setting including directing equipment operators and other personnel to implement measures required for environmental protection is an asset. 
  • Prior experience working at a remote mining operation is an asset. 
  • Mechanical and instrumentation aptitude, with knowledge (or ability to learn) the repair of scientific field equipment is an asset. 
  • Strong/demonstrated leadership, communicating and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and proficiency with computers particularly database management and interpretation, is essential. 
  • Written and verbal communication proficiency is essential. 
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures. 
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Working knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial (British Columbia) environmental regulatory requirements is an asset. 
  • Supervisory skills/experience is an asset. 
  • Project and coordination experience, and knowledge of BC regulatory requirements for potable water, septic systems, and treated effluent discharges, are assets. 
  • Stress management skills. 
  • Strong time management skills and decision-making skills. 
  • Cross cultural awareness with an understanding and sensitivity of the challenges associated with differences in cultural and economic backgrounds.

  • Operation off-road vehicles, including quads, snowmobiles and boats. 
  • Backcountry skiing or snowshoeing. 
  • Knowledge & understanding of avalanche terrain risks. 

Additional Information:

  • Work at remote location (camp) on a 13 days on/13 days off rotation with 2 days travel.
  • Twinrix vaccination is a requirement of employment.
  • Able to pass a pre-employment medical screening.
  • Be able maintain high levels of performance over 12 hour shifts.
  • Minimum Level 1 first aid ticket (training provided as necessary).
  • Able to work in areas of extreme weather conditions.
  • Able to work in close quarters with the team.
